Bethpage Wins & Koepka is in the Books

That got interesting! With four straight bogeys to start the inward nine, and some brilliant play by Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepkas’ lead shrunk from seven to one fairly quickly. In the end Brooks held strong and pared 18 to win his 2nd straight PGA Championship.

Brooks Koepka has officially written himself into the history books with this victory.

  • First golfer in history to be a two-time defending champion for two Majors at the same time. 2017, 2018 U.S. Opens and 2018, 2019 PGA Championships
  • Second player to win back-to-back PGA Championships since 1958. (Tiger Woods has done it twice)
  • Brooks Koepka joins the likes of Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as the only American golfers to win four majors before they were 30.

These are not small achievements and Brooks definitely did it with some flare this weekend.

For 54 holes Brooks was laughing at Bethpage. On Saturday Bethpage started to show some teeth, only 20% of the field shot under par. The fangs came out on the final round Sunday, with only 13% of the field shooting under par for the day, and only 6 golfers finished the tournament in red figures. The wind was absolutely playing havoc on every shot and one has to think that after four days of walking and mentally playing Bethpage that fatigue was most definitely starting to set in on these guys.

Bethpage Black is a monster with tight fairways, plenty of sand, long carries, and deep rough. The next major event that will be at Bethpage is the 2024 Ryder Cup. Should be very interesting to see the best on this course again.
